Fraud Prevention Mechanism

Securing physical cheques in a digital world.

Prior to PPS, when a high-value cheque was deposited, clearing banks had no reliable way to verify if the cheque was chemically altered. Scammers used washing techniques to change a ₹50,000 cheque into ₹5,00,000. PPS forces the issuer to electronically pre-submit exact details, blocking tampered cheques instantly.

Financial Thresholds

₹50,000+
Optional but Recommended

Banks provide the PPS facility for any cheque valued at ₹50,000 or above. While left to the customer's discretion, utilizing it ensures total liability protection against alterations.

₹5,00,000+
Strictly Mandatory

For cheques of ₹5 Lakh and beyond, RBI guidelines state that banks can legally refuse to clear the cheque if PPS data is not pre-submitted by the issuer.

Submission Methods

Frequently Asked

What happens if I don't submit PPS details?

For cheques under ₹5 Lakh, it will likely clear, but you lose the right to dispute fraud. For cheques of ₹5 Lakh+, the clearing house will reject it with a "PPS Details Missing" remark.

When is the deadline to submit PPS data?

You must submit before the cheque is presented at the clearing house by the receiver. It is advised to submit immediately upon handing over the physical cheque.

Can PPS details be modified once submitted?

No. Once Positive Pay data is registered, it cannot be edited. If you made an error, you must destroy the physical cheque, issue a fresh one, and submit a new PPS request.
